I love working with gourds.  I started working with them only recently.   I'm a special education teacher and work with students with moderate and severe disabilities.  I began working with the gourds to find activities that my students might be able to do in class and became hooked!

Gouds have been around for thousands of years and before Tupperware and plastics, most people used them to carry or store food and liquids in.  Gourds are a plant that are similar to pumpkins, but when they dry out they leave behind a wooden shell.  It takes almost a year to grow gourds and then they must be carefully cleaned, carved, painted, etc.

Gourds can sell from any where $30 -$20,000, depending on the style and amount of work that goes into them.
